Steel is the most commonly used metallic material and is found in virtually every industrial sector.  There are over 2,000 different grades of steel, varying in hardness, malleability and toughness and can be applied according to the requirements profile.

    Milling steel

    One of the special strengths of HUFSCHMIED tools is the machining of hard steels, as used in tool-making, mould-making or aero-engine construction.  This is where efficiency and performance of the milling tools in use really counts.

    Hard steels represent substantial challenges to the microstructure of the edge and the pvd coating. Consistent processing forces and maintaining a uniform thermal balance for as long as possible, are vital considerations here.

    • Milling tools for steel of every grade of hardness

      HUFSCHMIED tools from the Hard-Line range are perfectly configured for the challenges in the milling of steel of varying hardness.  For chrome-nickel alloys, our range provides special tools with a positive cutter geometry.  In addition, we offer special solutions for the milling and drilling of cobalt-chrome alloys.

  • Steel up to 56 HRC

    Milling steel up to 56 HRC

    Steels up to 56 HRC constitute the majority of hardened steels.  They are extensively used to produce polymer injection moulds or aluminium die-casting moulds.  Components for mechanical engineering applications are also often made from such steels.  The focus here is mainly on the shortest possible processing time for components together with a long service life of the milling tools.

    • High-feed cutters and smoothing cutters for increased efficiency

      HUFSCHMIED has devised a Time Saving Concept, in which the high-feed cutters HHF346 and HHF646 are operated in conjunction with the smoothing cutters of the HC2X2 to HC2X4 series.  For smaller processing tasks, mini-milling cutters HHM905 and HHM915 are used.  All tools are available with PVD coatings from TL8 to TL12.

  • Steel from 56 to 64 HCR

    Milling steel from 56 to 64 HRC

    Steels of a hardness between 56 HRC and 64 HRC are labelled as the range of medium-hard steels by HUFSCHMIED.  Their application area extends from injection mould tools for fibre-reinforced materials and tools for prototypes to high-stress parts in mechanical engineering.

    The shortest possible processing time when milling medium-hard steels is equally important to a long service life of the milling tools.

    • High-feed cutters and smoothing cutters for increased efficiency

      For steel-processing in the range between 56 and 64 HRC, HUFSCHMIED has devised a Time Saving Concept: High-feed milling cutters HHF646 and high-feed ball-nose cutters HHF676 are operated in conjunction with the smoothing cutters of the HC2X2 to HC2X4 series.

      For the processing of smaller components, we recommend the mini-milling cutters HHM905 and HHM915.  All tools are available with PVD coatings from TL12 to TL13.

  • Steel above 64 HRC

    Milling steel above 64 HRC

    Steels above a hardness of 64 HRC, are described as the hard application range for hardened steels by HUFSCHMIED.  These steels are mainly made into cutting and forming dies for metal parts and cold- and hot-forming tools.  In mechanical engineering, this material is used for the manufacturing of components such as spindle bearings or valve controls, both of which are high-stress parts and need to function with high precision.

    As with all materials, for the manufacturing of engineered components made from steels above 64 HRC, a short processing time is paramount.  At the same time, a long service life for the machining tools is absolutely essential.

    • High-feed cutters and smoothing cutters for increased efficiency

      HUFSCHMIED has devised a Time Saving Concept for steel processing that facilitates a particularly efficient production.  It consists of the high-feed milling cutters HHF646 and the high-feed ball-nose cutters HHF676 in conjunction with the smoothing cutters of the HC645 to HC647 series.

      For smaller processing tasks, the mini-milling cutters HC63XM and HC64XM are used.  All tools are available with PVD coating TL13.

  • Cr-Ni steel

    Milling Cr-Ni steel

    Cr‑Ni steels, also known as stainless steels, are always used for applications where the components come into contact with either water or other corrosive media.  The reason being that Cr-Ni steel is extremely resistant against corrosion.  This is especially important in aero-engine parts or components in the chemical industries.

    In most cases, the manufacturing of such products requires the shortest possible processing time together with a long service life of the milling tools.

    • High-feed cutters and smoothing cutters for increased efficiency

      For the milling of Cr-Ni steel, Hufschmied provides a tool range that has been developed specifically for the milling and drilling of tough and hard materials.  Amongst them are the tools of the HC1X0 series, available as ball-nose cutters and torus cutters with a variety of PVD coatings, ranging from TL8 to TL12.

  • Inconel® / Hastelloy®

    Milling Inconel® und Hastelloy®

    Inconel® and Hastelloy® are Cr-Ni steel alloys that have been developed specifically for components in the hot gas section of aero-engines and this is where they are mainly deployed.  In most cases, the shortest possible processing time for the components together with a long service life of the milling tools is required.

    Hufschmied has developed tools for the milling and drilling of Cr-Ni steel alloys that are specifically configured for the processing of tough and hard materials.  Tools from the HC9XO series are available as ball-nose and torus cutters with various PVD coatings from TL8 to TL12 and are perfectly suited to the machining of Inconel® and Hastelloy®.
